Upper East Side: a walkable, central Miami neighborhood

Nestled along Biscayne Boulevard from 54th Street to 77 St., the upper East side neighborhood of Miami is most famous for its Miami Modern, or MiMo, architecture.

The area, which is mostly residential, is flanked by an array cafes, restaurants, boutiques and motels in the trademark architecture.

The walkable area draws many couples and young families who want to live in a central Miami location that offers just about everything within walking distance.

At the center of the area is Legion Park, 6447 NE 7th Ave, a 37-acre bayfront greenspace that features a picnic area, playground, recreation center, boat ramps, a dog park and lots more for residents and visitors to enjoy. The park also hosts a popular farmers’ market every Saturday.

The Upper East side is a short drive from downtown Miami, North Beach and offers easy access to Miami International Airport.

The renovated MiMo-style hotels, a less pricey alternative to those on Miami Beach and downtown, are popular with young travelers who can easily hop on a Metrobus or a ride share service for a straight shot downtown, Aventura or beyond.

Housing in the area is in high demand and many renovated homes are priced from more than $1.5 million. Condominiums, which range from older low-rise units and waterfront to newer mid-rise units are priced from the mid-$200,000s to more than a million.

Midtown Miami is comprised of the Wynwood and Edgewater neighborhoods of Miami. The popular area is north of Downtown  Miami and south of the Miami Design District, bound by North 20th Street to the south, I-195 to the north, I-95 to the west and Biscayne Bay to the east. Since its inception in 2005, Midtown has grown from a shopping promenade and three residential towers into its own community.

The central and hip location allows residents to walk to work, dinner and shopping destinations, which are tremendous perks at a time car prices, car insurance  and gas prices are high. The infrastructure,  like power lines and roads, need updating. Don't expect any bargains,  rents in the newer buildings are upwards of 2k a month for a one-bedroom and homes are just short of prohibitive for fixers. Still, for newcomers to the area, the price may be well worth it.
